Honor Award Terrazzo Versatility

Description: This overall project consisted of approximately 9,000 sq. ft. of sand cushion Terrazzo in the lobby and corridors of the first and second floors.  The decorative portion of this work is a 14 foot diameter dished circle that served as the base of a Foucault Pendulum.  This concave surface required the same distance of clearance between the floor and the pendulum throughout the sweep of the 12 foot arc, the circle radius of the arc measures 60 feet.  The center point of this circle measures 3.5 inches below the outside rim of the circle.  The decorative Terrazzo is made up of 5 difference color blend combinations using 4 different colored matrices.  Because of the sharp angles and small spaces, it was necessary to us #0 and #1 Marble chips.  The border around the Marble inserts is only 1 inch wide.  The design was made of 1/4" x 3/8" brass bar, reinforced with 1/8" brass bar.  Once again this project demonstrates the versatility of Terrazzo.

Honor Award

Veterinary Teaching Hospital - Washington State University - Pullman, WA

Description:  The 2,500 sq. ft. lobby was designed to represent "foot prints in the sand" of various animals that will be treated at the veterinary hospital.  The field was comprised of ivory, cream, and botte with 5% mother of pearl for sparkle.  The shadows in the sand were created using 1/8", 3/16", 1/4" brass "L" strips with dark cedar seeded next to the strip.  The "L" strip was used so as not to cut into the dry pack.  Footprints were 62 glass castings representing 18 animals including an eagle, grizzly bear, cougar, and human among others.
